Dogs On The Run LLC home pageLike many other dog trainers, my own rather rambunctious dogs are the reason I got hooked on dog training. The essence of training at Dogs on the Run, LLC is captured by the words: relationship, success, and responsibility. If you find yourself thinking that your dog is more of a pain than a pleasure, then what you probably have is a dog in need of training.Agility is a sport in which a dog negotiates an obstacle course following signals from the handler about which obstacle to take next. Do you want a well trained dog?

A well trained Family dog. This is my definition of a well-trained family dog: a dog, like the three dogs pictured here, who is apleasure to be around. Sometimes really well-trained dogs appear to be doing NOTHING -- they're not barking, they're not pulling on the leash, they're not stealing your dinner or knocking over your elderly aunt. When they are doing something, they're playing nicely with your children, they're going for hikes in the woods, they're happily trotting by your side as you walk around your neighborhood. Highly trained dogs can participate in more complex activities, such as service jobs, or dog sports such as agility, which is the sport I play with my own dogs. (For more information about agility, see my agility page.) But any well-mannered dog can become an important and joyful part of your family.
If you find yourself thinking that your dog is more of a pain than a pleasure, then what you probably have is a dog in need of training.

  1. When you are out for an enjoyable walk with your dog, do you feel like you're being towed?
  2. When the front door opens a crack does your dog bolt out and head for the hills?
  3. When you call your dog in from the back yard, does he suddenly appear deaf?
  4. Do you have to guard your spaghetti and meatballs because your dog can't tell the difference between your dinner (on the table) and his (on the floor)?
  5. When you walk in the door does your dog jump up on you with his muddy paws?
  6. Can you leave a loaf of bread on the counter?
  7. Do you have to keep your garbage in Fort Knox?

A well mannered dog is more funWouldn't you prefer to live with a dog that comes when he's called, walks nicely on a loose leash, and calmly greets your guests? No matter the size, age, or breed of your dog, these all are reasonable, obtainable goals. A well-mannered dog is more fun to play with, and is gentler with your kids. A well-mannered dog is a delight to take for walks and to show off to your friends. A well-mannered dog is welcome anywhere.
